R&S: Isn't it hypocritical to accept evolution but still also believe that poor people?

Should be fed, clothed, and sheltered? I am not going to deny that evolution through natural selection is an established fact, however, why do then so many people who claim to accept evolution also believe that poor people should be fed, clothed, and protected all at the expense of the rich and powerful? Our ancestors evolved by being the most powerful and most ruthless so they could mate and provide for their offspring, while the poor and the weak died off and were weeded out of the gene-pool. Why did that change? Can rational people not see that poor and weak people are a detriment to our advancement as a species?
