How did people in pagan central and eastern europe eat food when having dinner?

What does Paganism have to do with using cutlery or not, I wonder. Ancint Romans used spoons and dishes and laid down around tables. They used their fingers and some forms of forks for things which were difficult to eat, eg snails.
